Kanta Bai Kanta
Bai is old frail lonely lady and was picked up from
a railway station suffering from acute anemic conditions
unable to walk. We carried her up to a taxi and rushed
her to a clinic. Her only chance of recovery was ‘Blood
transfusion’ With B negative group getting the
right match was a challenge. Few volunteered but the
group didn’t match. Ahmed an eleven year old
with his face wearing a forlorn look came in with
a matching blood group. He lay next to Kanta Bai donating
blood. Once the procedure was over Ahmed asked the
doctor with trembling voice “When am I going
to die now?” A question stemming from a innocent
understanding of a young mind that perhaps all his
blood has been extracted leacing little hope of survival
and to save Kanta Bai. He was fed and paid some money.
When asked why he had volunteered to donate blood
if he knew that he will die after that he replied
“The lady resembled my mother who died of hunger
and sickness years ago.” And he himself does
not want to reach that stage.

This man we picked up from a drain
at Juhu half eaten by worms after we got him nursed
and fed him spoon by spoon, he only said “I
have lived like an animal but I am going to die like
an Angel”. He smiled, doctor had removed all
the worms from his wounds. When he was going to sleep
at night, he looked at clean sheets and again gave
a dim smile and said “at least I will be going
to God’s home in clean clothes and shaven face”.
It was so wonderful to see the greatness of the man,
who could speak like that and not blame anyone. Next
morning, we saw him sleeping peacefully wearing smile.
He had made his way to God’s home.
